Tea & Cake

Tea & Cake Nikon FM 28mm Ilford FP4 125

Taken with Nikon FM, 28mm lens, on Ilford FP4 ISO 125, this is my girlfriend in a cake shop that we like to visit. I really, really like this photo and was extremely pleased with how it came out. Everything I want to be in focus is, and everything I want to be nicely blurred is exactly that. What I really like about this photo is the contrast between light and dark, for example my girlfriend’s hair, starting dark toward the top of the image and then lightening as it flows down over her dark sweater, the dark teapot next to the white cups, the cupcakes with one dark(ish) frosting in a lighter cake case and the other one with a light frosting and a dark cake case, or even the empty white table and chairs in the background in comparison to the black chalkboard on the wall next to it. The fact that there was a window directly behind me when I took this shot probably helped to light it so well.

What I probably like most about this shot however is that although this is an attempt at a portrait, the subject is not looking at the camera but instead gazing off out of shot, making it have in my opinion more of a feeling of being a natural snapshot of a random moment of that day.

On a side note I’ll add that the cake’s in that place tasted pretty amazing.
