Street Photography – Olympus OM-D EM-5; 88

Welcome to edition 88 of my street photography series using my Olympus OM-D EM-5. Once again all images are taken on the streets of the Welsh Capital, Cardiff.

P1010020.jpg 25mm, ISO 400, f4, 1/640th sec. This postman was perfectly framing himself in the scaffolding as he walked down the street towards me, lost in his letters. The woman happened to just appear and stare at him at the right moment.

P1010031.jpg 25mm, ISO 800, f4, 1/640th sec. What I like most about this is not only do you see a reflected image but that image doesn’t actually reveal anything about the person out of shot as you can’t see their face, the pavement cuts them off at the neck.

P1010038.jpg 25mm, ISO 800, f4, 1/1000th sec. Another reflected image but this time more of the street and buildings in it themselves, the cyclist being only partially reflected as he rides past.

P1010042.jpg 25mm, ISO 400, f4, 1/800th sec. This is all about the shadows and contrast of dark and light, the bold shadows of the man as he walks between the bollards, and the bright lightness of his bag com, pared to the dark clothing he’s wearing.

P1010051.jpg 25mm, ISO 400, f4, 1/2500th sec. The woman is stepping exactly where I wanted her to be, shadow in front, light behind, hair back-lit.

P1010052.jpg 25mm, ISO 400, f4, 1/1600th sec. This is one of those decisive moments where everything just works together. Taken mere seconds after the image above, the man in the foreground would’ve blocked the view half a second later but as it is the man with a great moustache and helmet combination is perfectly framed and lit as he steps out of the shadows around him. I’m particularly pleased with this one.
